Your final test before achieving your motorcycle licence.
What is Module 2?
Module 2 is where it all comes together – the on-road part of your practical test, designed to assess your ability to ride safely and confidently in real-world traffic. Unlike Module 1, Mod 2 isn’t about cones and controlled spaces. This is out on the public roads, mixing it with everything from school-run SUVs to the odd tractor.
What's involved?
Training with Shires means you’ll get to know the streets, roundabouts and road layouts you’re likely to face on test day, because we use Burton and Colwick test centres and train exclusively within those areas.
Our expert DVSA-approved instructors will help you cover the essentials: following road signs, navigating junctions, one-way streets, and mandatory stop lines, as well as safe overtaking, handling roundabouts of every size, and using your mirrors and lifesavers instinctively.
We’ll guide you through the full Module 2 experience, arrange your test, and give you plenty of practice in the very same areas you’ll be riding on the big day. By the time you take your test, you’ll feel familiar with the roads, confident in your skills, and ready to pass.

Licence & age requirements
Provisional or Full UK Driving Licence:
CBT
Your DL196 CBT certificate must still be in date. If it’s expired, you’ll need to renew before booking your test.
Theory Test
You’ll need a valid motorcycle theory test pass certificate – this must be shown at the test centre.
Module 1
You cannot book or take your Module 2 until you’ve successfully passed Module 1 and have your pass certificate (the examiner will want to see it).
How long does the Module 2 test take, and what does it involve?
The Module 2 test usually takes around 40 minutes. It’s a road ride with an examiner following on a bike or in a car, giving directions via radio.
You’ll be asked to ride in different traffic conditions, follow road signs, demonstrate normal stops, and carry out a few manoeuvres like pulling over safely or an angled start.
There’s also a brief independent riding section where you’ll follow road signs to a set destination.
Can I use my own bike for Module 2, or do I have to use a training school bike?
You can use your own bike if it meets the DVSA’s requirements for the category of licence you’re going for (A1, A2, or A). It must be taxed, insured, MOT’d if necessary and display L-plates.
Most of our students prefer to use one of our well-maintained training bikes, which are guaranteed to meet all the test criteria.
What happens if I make a mistake during the Module 2 test?
Not every slip means an instant fail. The examiner marks faults as either minor (riding errors), serious, or dangerous. You can pick up a few minor faults and still pass, but any serious or dangerous fault will result in a fail.
The key is to stay calm and keep riding safely – small mistakes are common, so don’t let them throw you off.
How soon can I take my Module 2 test after passing Module 1?
You can book your Module 2 as soon as you’ve passed Module 1 (or at the same time as booking Mod 1) and received your pass certificate – there’s no minimum waiting period.
We recommend keeping up your training and aiming to take Module 2 while everything you’ve learned is still fresh, but with a week's gap between them.
