The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) is most commonly associated with the unrestricted A licence (which lets you ride any size motorcycle), but in the UK, the training pathway and the term “DAS” can sometimes be used informally to cover all the progressive licence routes: A1, A2, and A.

Technically, DAS refers specifically to the training and testing route for riders aged 24 or over (or 21+ under progressive access) to go straight to the full A licence - this is called “Direct Access” because it allows you to get the highest level of motorcycle licence without spending years on a smaller bike.

Our courses in Derby & Nottingham are designed to guide you from CBT through to passing your test on a larger bike, giving you the freedom to ride the motorcycle you want.

A1 Licence

Minimum Age: 17

What you can ride: Motorcycles up to 125cc, max power 11kW (14.6bhp)

Licence progression: Must hold a valid UK provisional licence

Test requirement: Pass CBT, theory test, and practical tests (Mod 1 & Mod 2) on a 125cc motorcycle

A2 Licence

Minimum Age: 19

What you can ride: Motorcycles up to 35kW (47bhp)

Licence progression: Must hold a valid UK provisional licence

Test requirement: Pass CBT, theory test, and practical tests (Mod 1 & Mod 2) on a 395cc+ motorcycle producing between 20kW and 35kW

Progressive access: If you have held an A1 licence for 2 years, you can upgrade to A2 by taking the practical tests again on an A2-appropriate bike

A Licence

Minimum Age: 24 (or 21+ if you’ve held an A2 licence for 2 years - this is called progressive access)

What you can ride: Any size motorcycle, no power restrictions

Licence progression: Must hold a valid UK provisional licence

Test requirement: Pass CBT, theory test, and practical tests (Mod 1 & Mod 2) on a 595cc+ motorcycle producing at least 40kW (53.6bhp)
