What Are My Next Steps After Passing My CBT at 16?
Now you’re legally allowed to ride a 50cc moped on the road with L-plates, but you might be wondering what your options are from here.
Here’s what you can do:
Stick with your CBT
Keep riding your 50cc moped with L-plates.
Your CBT certificate is valid for 2 years.
This is the most common route for 16-year-olds, giving you time to get comfortable on the road and gain valuable experience before moving up.
Get Your Full Moped (AM) Licence
If you want to ride without L-plates and be able to carry a passenger, you can go for your full AM moped licence.
Here’s how:
Step 1: Pass the motorcycle theory test.
Step 2: Take and pass the Module 1 and Module 2 practical riding tests on a 50cc moped.
With an AM licence, you can:
Ride a 50cc moped without L-plates.
Carry a pillion passenger.
Ride abroad in many European countries.
Looking Ahead to Age 17
When you turn 17, you’ll open up new options:
Upgrade to a 125cc motorcycle or scooter
Start working towards your A1 motorcycle licence (theory + Module 1 & 2 practical tests on a 125cc bike).
