You're 17-18 and have done your CBT
Congratulations - you’ve got your CBT and you’re on the road!
Now, let’s look at your next steps and licence options as a 17- or 18-year-old rider:
Stick with your CBT
Ride a 125cc motorcycle or scooter (maximum 11kW/15bhp)
Display L-plates at all times
No passengers or motorway riding
Your CBT certificate lasts 2 years - use this time to build confidence and enjoy your independence
Upgrade to a full A1 Motorcycle Licence
If you want more freedom, you can work towards your A1 licence. Here’s how:
Step 1: Pass the motorcycle theory test
Step 2: Pass Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests on a 125cc bike
With an A1 licence, you can:
Ride a 125cc bike without L-plates
Carry a pillion passenger
Ride on motorways
No need to redo your CBT every two years
Looking Ahead to Age 19
At 19, you’ll become eligible for the A2 licence, which lets you ride larger bikes (up to 35kW/47bhp)
You can either train for A2 as a new course or “progressive access” if you’ve held an A1 for two years
Which Option is Right for Me?
Stay on CBT if you want to keep it simple and ride for fun or commuting
Go for the A1 licence if you want to lose the L-plates, take a passenger, or ride on motorways
