You need to complete your CBT first.
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is your first step to getting on two wheels in the UK. It’s not a test, but a one-day course designed to teach you the essentials of safe riding.
You’ll learn the basics of bike control, road safety, and good habits - no prior experience needed.
Complete your CBT and you’ll be able to ride a 125cc motorcycle or scooter on L-plates.
What's next?
Once you’ve passed your CBT at age 17 or 18, you can:
Ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc (max 11kW power)
Ride independently on the road (with L-plates, no passengers or motorways)
Build skills and road experience at your own pace
Your CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for 2 years - plenty of time to enjoy life on two wheels.
A1 Licence: If you want to lose the L-plates and carry a passenger, you can take your theory and practical tests for the A1 licence (still 125cc, but full licence privileges).
