Job Summary:
This role is suitable for experienced CBT Motorcycle Instructors or for riders who do not yet hold instructor qualifications but would like to follow a clear pathway into motorcycle instruction.
If you are already qualified to conduct CBTs, you can start delivering training straight away.
If you are new to instructing, we provide a supported route into the role - outlined below - once licensing is complete, you will begin paid work as a CBT Instructor.
CBT Instructors are responsible for delivering Compulsory Basic Training in line with DVSA rules and regulations, creating a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment for new riders.
Pathway to Becoming a CBT Instructor (for non-qualified applicants):
- Training undertaken in your own time
- Application for a DVSA licence to teach, including DBS check
- Once the licence is issued, paid work begins
- Full guidance and support provided throughout the process
Duties:
- Set out the training area to the specified DVSA CBT layout
- Deliver clear, structured and engaging CBT training
- Ensure all elements of the CBT syllabus are covered safely and correctly
- Provide constructive feedback to trainees
- Maintain a positive, professional learning environment
- Assess trainee ability and adapt teaching methods accordingly
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high training standards
- Complete all required DVSA paperwork and checks accurately
Skills & Requirements:
- Must have held a full A motorcycle licence for a minimum of 3 years
- Either:
- Already qualified to conduct CBTs (e.g. CBT1 / current CBT authority), or
- Willing to train and qualify as a CBT Instructor
- Strong riding skills and safety awareness
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with learners of varying abilities and confidence levels
- Passion for motorcycling and rider development
- Knowledge of different learning styles is desirable
